Two of the tables for the next game day

A town south of the border and a mining camp in the mountains,, two of the settings for this weekends games. Now these pics were taken before last weeks games and the setup has changed somewhat but the essentials are still there.

The mining camp has had some extra hills added and the buildings replaced with tent buildings. For the town, I have added some adobe walls and shifted the odd building.

What a Cowboy! campaign

So, after our recent successful game of What a Cowboy I am inspired to propose a campaign. To that end I have a few construction projects to add some extra scenery to the existing pool, a mine, a tent city and some additional scatter terrain among other items. Also I will need to work on some mounted figures, just in case.

So I will send out an invite soon to see who is interested and try to get a game day around the end of June.

Another Midgard Heroic Battles game played

We played another game of Midgard on May 24th, Empire vs Orcs. It was the first time for the Empire to show up on the table and while they had some good successes ultimately the Orcs looked to prevail. (game cut short for dinner)

We may yet get another game in before the end of May.

Recent game day Midgard Heroic Battles

Game two Orcs defending on the left, Dwarf attackers right.

Game one Dwarf defenders left, Orcs attacking on the right.

Two games of the same scenario, same results, the attacker won. In game one the Dwarfs were the defenders, game two the Orcs defended. There were two sessions, morning/afternoon, five players, one ref. There was no duplication of players so each group came up with their own battle plans.

The rules seemed to go over well with the players, as the ref I certainly liked them. I look forward to the next game of Midgard.

Full AARs can be found on the main site HERE.

Yet another Midgard game (planned for May 2nd)

So, this weeks scenario comes from the Midgard Chronicles book, scenario 7, Too eager! Last couple of games saw the defenders with no incentive to move. this time around, the defenders will be split with one contingent well separated from the other contingents, but holding on to the main objective. It will behoove the defenders to advance in support of this isolated group to both save them from destruction and to hold the objective.

Once again it will be Orc vs Dwarf  and this time around we will randomly determine who is the attacker and who is the defender. We may well play this game twice on Saturday with two different groups, all depends on who all can attend and when (morning or afternoon)

Upcoming game weekend Midgard Heroic Battles

Battle in the badlands! This weekend hope to run a couple of games of Midgard Heroic Battles with some of the guys. I plan to run the same battle for two different groups of players on Saturday and Sunday.

Dwarf defenders

The battle will see the Dwarves defending against a horde of Orcs. Both army lists are from the rulebook, the scenario is my own. (really just the first scenario with more scenery) The picture shows the troops set up for some solo gaming that I am playing this week in preparation for the weekend's event.

Recent game day

So we got our two games in this past Saturday. There were three players for Devilry and four for What a Cowboy! (not including me as GM) A good time had by most, if not all even though defeating the witches seem nigh impossible.

What a Cowboy was fun and moved along quite well despite a gaff in rules understanding.

Up next will be a game  of Midgard Heroic Battles at the Sgts Mess this Saturday!

April 11th proposed game day

One of the proposed games

So, I have two games set up for Saturday, What a Cowboy! and Devilry Afoot and I will set up a Pulp Alley game too.

Other possible games

Maybe Adeptus Titanicus giant robot gladiatorial matches as well or instead of Midgard. I just painted up 4 traitor titans, it might be nice to get them on the table.

Naturally, Pulp Alley is also high up on the list.

I have some witches and some Puritans, oh and a witch hunter general!

HERE is a link to a Youtube intro Devilry Afoot game. Note, not a video by me but an excellent video by Skirmish Wargames.

This is already set up and ready to go.

Midgard Heroic Battles game

I have watched a few videos of this game in action, I think it is time to give it a try.

Here is a LINK to an introductory video by Two Fat Lardies. They have more posted on Youtube.

It does do a lot of what Fantastic Battles does not. Some of my more important (to me) homegrown rules amendments for Fantastic Battles are apparently standard rules in Midgard. The good news is that there are no issues with basing! There are similarities, but also differences.

  • Units can be forced back/retreat
  • Units that are reduced to 1/2 strength have reduced combat
  • Leaders are important but do not dominate just like FB
  • Leaders can still issue challenges
  • Incorporates a command roll of 3+ but leaders can help out should you fail
  • Every unit can move independent of the command roll, command roll allows second move
  • Similar trait system for creating units
  • Looks easy to use, rules light
Overall it looks like a fun game! There is a new supplement being released now with campaign rules and 15 new scenarios.

Fantastic Battles upcoming game

So this weekend we will (hopefully) be playing another game of Fantastic battles, Orcs vs Dark Elves. The scenario is one of my own creation heavily inspired by a scenario in a wargame magazine. The original was a recreation of the Battle of Camlan. It had an interesting pre game sequence involving both sides in a mini Strategic stance showdown. Each side selects a strategy, Ambush, Cautious advance or bold charge. Once selected their choices would be crossed referenced and one side would be deemed to have out scouted their opponent or have tied each other. This end result dictates the deployment zones for the two armies.

In this case the bold charge has run into an ambush. The Orcs will deploy their army facing east while the Dark Elves will form up a blocking force to the east and an ambushing force to the north. The Orcs will deploy 75% of their force with the remainder arriving later in the game.

Their strategic stance choice also granted them a bonus army strategy and an objective. Hopefully this game will give me the chance to test out some new rules that I have been working on.

Battlefleet Gothic Campaign?

So, after one play of the game I have started thinking about a quick campaign of Battlefleet Gothic. This would be the planned campaign map of the Gethsemane sub-sector. This is right out of the rule book but quickly redrawn by me.

The campaign would focus on a classic Imperial vs Chaos struggle with any other groups acting as lesser powers and or pirates. We would use the 'new' rules that can be found on the Battlefleet Gothic FB page. They are really just a clarification and somewhat updated version of the classic rules.

The table has been set, the forces planned out, all is ready for our next game day!

All Quiet on the Martian Front - Return of the Tripods

Scooping up some civilians

American forces advance into the gap!

This weekend we gave Return of the Tripods a try, a reworking of All Quiet on the Martian Front rule set. It was a fun game. There were a few changes to the rules, some good, some bad. However for the two players that did not know the old rules, it seemed to flow fairly well.

This weekend Terminator Genisys!

So, since I am going to play this game at our outreach public gaming session in a couple of weekends I thought it would be nice to refresh my memory about how it is played. I have played it at least once, maybe back in 2022, so it is a refresher not a complete learning of the rules.

VSF Glorious Adventures in the Age of Steam FFOL game 2 for April 12th

Just working on the set up for the next game. This one will be less of a free for all more structured, perhaps... I am looking over scenarios to see if I can modify one for the game. At this point not certain how many players will be attending and there might be late arrivals. I am thinking about an escalating game so that late arrivals can still participate.

So maybe a raid on a farmstead while at the same time there are some archeologists that need rescuing. This time around I am cutting down the army lists a bit, no artillery for starters and I think I will try to keep it down to the recommended 5 units per faction.

Glorious Adventures in the Age of Steam [Fist Full of Lead] April 5 2025

Some of the action form the game last Saturday. Three players to start then we lost one and gained one. It was quite the chaotic game with lots of figure removal! The rules were quick enough to pick up, just need to remember those stoke rolls when activating vehicles...

VSF table for this weekends game of Glorious Adventures in the Age of Steam (GAAS)

So, GAAS is a variant, of sorts, of the Fist Full of Lead games Bigger Battles. There are minor changes in the rules from Bigger Battles and a real focus on the VSF aspect.  I have set up a roughly 8' by just over 4' area and the game will see up to 6 different factions fighting it out.

Pulp Alley Global Adventure campaign

So, our next campaign will be a globe trotting series of adventures! I have been inspired by the boardgame Fortune and Glory by Flying Frog. I am making use of their map and some of their cards and rules as the campaign rules, while the scenarios will of course be Pulp Alley.

The following list covers some of the changes, amendments that will be in place for the campaign.
