American forces advance into the gap! |
This weekend we gave Return of the Tripods a try, a reworking of All Quiet on the Martian Front rule set. It was a fun game. There were a few changes to the rules, some good, some bad. However for the two players that did not know the old rules, it seemed to flow fairly well.
Of significant note, the defense target number of the Tripods is, in many cases quite higher than the old rules. The defense number is the target number that must be equaled or beaten by the attacker on a D10. It certainly did make it pretty tough to hit the Tripods.
I liked the new special orders and how the Earth forces see the number of orders available decrease over time. The Martians seem to be very challenged in their use of these special orders.
There are many other differences, too many to list right now and one play is not enough to pass judgement. The other thing is that they only have ad hoc rules for the American forces and there seems to be some aspects of the American forces that did not get fully translated into the new edition.
Anyways we had fun, the game was played to a conclusion in three hours with victory going to the Martians.
ULLAAAAA!
